Description
Photo of statue of eagle with holiday lights in snow winter night in Sofia, Bulgaria. This is one of the four statues of eagles on Eagles' bridge, historical landmark of the city. The bridge was constructed in 1891 by Czech architect Václav Prošek, his brother Jozef and his cousins Bohdan and Jiří. In 19th century the bridge marked the eastern border of Sofia. Now the bridge marks the beginning of the so called “perfect city center”. The eagles’ figures set up on its four ends allegorize the longing for freedom, because at that place for the first time in 1888 the Bulgarian prisoners and freedom fighters, sent in exile in Ottoman empire, are welcomed back in their homeland. For this reason today Sofia’s Mayor delivers the ritual key of the city to its prominent guests and regarded personalities just on the Eagles’ Bridge.
