A boy drinks water from the tap of the Nejjarine fountain in Fez, Morocco
Funduq al-Najjariyyin or the Inn of the carpenters, also spelled Fondouk el- Nejjarine, is a funduq, a traditional inn, built in the 17th century by the Alaouite Sultan Ismail Ibn Sharif in Fes el Bali, the old medina quarter in the city of Fez, Morocco. It is a prominent example of Moroccan riad architecture.
There's attached fountain, called saqayya, which was commissioned by Sultan Abd al-Rahman in the beginning of the 19th century. The fountain is very famous because of its beautiful mosaic artwork. It's placed in front of the inn building, facing the square. The water was used for drinking, especially for the guests of the hotel but now the locals still drink the water from the tap of the fountain. It is enclosed by two columns and richly decorated by zellige, stucco, and its own carved wooden canopy.
Today Fondouk el- Nejjarine houses a private Museum of Wooden Arts & Crafts.
